Guy Rose painting value: what matters

Rose painted in France and in California, and his career ended abruptly in 1921, so values for his work vary widely. These are the questions a specialist asks when looking at a Rose. We don't publish price lists, because a figure without the painting in front of us would be a guess.

Subject

Rose is best known for his California coast subjects (Carmel, Laguna Beach, La Jolla) and for the Giverny landscapes painted while he lived in France. The gallery's past sales are both coast subjects from his California years: The Passing Storm (1917–1919) and To Headland (Carmel Coast).

Medium and scale

Oils on canvas are the core of his work. Measure the image area, not the frame.

Date and place

A place name on the painting or its reverse helps a great deal, since Rose's French and California periods have different characters. His productive California years run from 1914 to the stroke of 1921.

Condition

Check for flaking, tears, relining, overpaint and yellowed varnish, which can flatten Rose's light. Any treatment is best left to a conservator, after advice.

Labels and provenance

Exhibition and dealer labels, notes on the stretcher and family papers can all help document a Rose. Keep them together and photograph the back.

Authenticity

Rose's popularity means reproductions, copies and misattributions turn up. Signature, technique, materials and documented history all play a part. A dealer who regularly handles California Impressionist paintings can tell you quickly whether a work deserves closer study.

Appraisal and next steps

Steven Stern Fine Arts evaluates each painting individually on authorship, period, subject, condition, provenance, exhibition history, literature and importance. To begin, send photos through the seller inquiry or call (310) 570-5679. You can also compare with Rose works the gallery has sold.

Questions owners ask

How much is a Guy Rose painting worth?
It depends on the painting. Rose's work ranges from small studies to large finished canvases, and French and California subjects have different histories. The gallery can give an informed view once it has seen photographs and the dimensions.
Can Steven Stern Fine Arts appraise my Rose?
The gallery offers confidential evaluations and lists fine art appraisals among its services. Let us know whether you need a valuation to sell, or a formal appraisal for insurance, estate or donation purposes.
My painting is small. Is it still of interest?
Yes. Subject, date and quality matter as much as size. Send photographs and the measurements and we will tell you honestly.
Is it a painting or a print?
Rose's images have been widely reproduced. Photograph the surface at an angle and look closely; we can help you tell the difference.

Have a Guy Rose to sell?

A Giverny garden, a Carmel or Laguna coast, a La Jolla view or a figure: tell us about it. Photographs of the front, the back and the signature are the best place to start.
